Hey guys, I was just wondering what oil weight you run in all your 2 stroke bottom ends. I put in The bel ray gear saver 75w for the colder conditions of riding, and in the summer i put in 80w. I misplaced my order from RM, and ordered 85w oil. Is that i significant jump in weight? Just wanting to see what the majority of you guys run in your bottom ends. Thanks!

You should be fine with the warmer temps, typically I run the 10-50 in the colder temps and will run the heavier stuff once warmer temps come in...

10w40 in my KDX. It's what my manual suggests.

I buy the big jug of Rotella 15-40 from Walmart and change it religiously....after every single race and every other trail ride. Works for me.

Pennzoil 30 wt, change after every 5 rides. No issues in decades and it is cheap.

Been using Lucas full synthetic 10-30 in the warmer months and 10-40 in the cooler ones. No problems yet.

I've been running Bel Ray Gear Saver in different weights depending on conditions and have been happy with everything but the price.
You guys running the Rotella, have you ever had any issues with glazed plates and subsequent clutch issues?
Seize the day, not the bike!

I switched to Rotella last year and haven't noticed any problems.

No issues here with clutches and I run it in 5 different bikes. I prescribe more to the philosophy of change it more frequently rather than pay out the nose and change it less frequently.

Opinions on oil are kind of like, well you know, but for what it is worth I've been happy with the Rotella. I started on it when I bought a KLR650 for adventure riding. It was recommended on a lot of forums for break-in on that bike and I've been using it in all my other dirtbikes ever since.

The Rotella does not have the "energy saving" molly additive that wrecks your clutch. I've been using for a few years with starting the 450 in really cold weather being the only draw back.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info on the Rotella. I've certainly been considering it for some time as I go through a lot of oil. I personally change mine every two rides, however I ride 5-6 hours (per hour meter) each trip. That being said, I'm at 10-12 hours between changes and conventional wisdom says to do it every eight.
Question for Ringokelly and Mknight. I think Ringo said doing it every five rides and Mknight every two. Approx how many hours are you putting on it in those rides? I know I tend to ride a little longer per ride than the average rider out here.
I will probably try it regardless, just curious how many hours you guys average before changes.

There is nothing really magical about the timing (hours) I use for oil changes. The "after every race, every few rides" is just a guideline I use. During races I (and my boys) tend to abuse the clutch more and I like the idea of the oil being fresh for the next race. Trail rides are usually more casual and I'm often on a multi-day ride/camp trip where I may log a lot more hours than a race, but I wait and change it after.

I ran Rotella full syn in my four stoke KTM because of the clutch isues with that model. I now run Valvoline 20w-50 in the 300 as that is what weight they recommend in the OM. Valvaline is the best IMHO!
