"Trailwork day, Saturday, Sept. 11th. In conjunction with National Trails Day and the USFS. Sponsored/organized through URMB (urmb.org). American Fork Canyon. Details, including exact project, coming soon. Come help out because you love the canyon, bike, hike or moto the trails and want to give back."

Just a heads up. I'm organizing the mtn. bikers. I believe Kalyn (USFS) has contacted some of you to help with the moto group. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Steve

Kalyn and I met a couple of days ago and developed a plan. I received this email from her today:

"Hey all!

Here is an update and the details for National Public Lands Day!
Time: September 11, 2010 at 8:00 am.
Place: Meet at Elk Camp located off the Cascade Springs Road. The Elk Camp is just east of where the South Fork of Little Deer Creek Trail crosses the road. It is located on the right hand side of the road and is approximately 1.5 miles from the junction of SR92 and the Cascade Springs Road.

We will be focusing most of the work on the South Fork of Little Deer Creek Trail and possibly doing some work on the Ridge Trail.

I am excited to get everyone together and get some good work done. National Public Lands Day was a great success last year and hope it will be the same this year. This is a great opportunity for everyone to work together and contribute to the health and safety of our Forest Lands. Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Forest Service, and we so appreciate your service.

Please mark your calendars and we hope to see you on that day! If you have questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

It would helpful to RSVP by September 8th, to get an idea of how many people I can expect to be out there on that day.

Thanks!

Kalyn Laycock
Assistant Volunteer Coordinator
801-342-5280"

Kalyn is filling in for Cheryl Butler while Cheryl fills in for Joe McFarlane. Kalyn is awesome to work with. Anyway, we are planning on working until 1 or 2 but we will take you if only for an hour or two.

Steve

DATE: Saturday, September 11th

TIME: 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM

LOCATION: South Fork Little Deer Creek Trail (#252), south section. We will be working on several drainage issues and the small reroute.

PARKING: Park/meet at Elk Camp, approx. 1.5 miles down the Cascade Springs Rd. from State Road 92 (Alpine Loop Rd.).

WHAT TO BRING: Lunch, water, work gloves, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent. All tools will be provided by the US Forest Service.

WHAT TO WEAR: Long pants/jeans, work shoes (no sandals or flip flops!), and a hat. The temperature can change throughout the day, so a light jacket or long sleeve shirt may be helpful as well.

CARPOOL: Due to limited parking, we’re encouraging participants to carpool up to the work site.

GATE FEE: There is no fee to drive up and park while you're working with the trail crew. If you're going to stay on afterwards and ride / hike / motorcycle / horseback / picnic / camp, you'll need to pay the $6 fee. As you pull through the pay shack, stop and let them know that you're a volunteer working on the National Public Lands Day project working with URMB and Kalyn Laycock and Cheryl Butler from the US Forest Service.

RSVP/Questions: PM me here or email me at urmb [at] urmb [dot] com.

Great care has been taken to ensure that this trail, including the re-route, will be accessible to ALL user groups.

I don't mean to be the party pooper but NPLD is two weeks after that on the 25th.

You are correct. NPLD is officially on the 25th, but the Forest Service has leeway to conduct projects within a couple week time period and have it count.

Sorry to keep bumping this to the top. Still looking for trail workers for tomorrows project. If you're willing and able, we'd love to have your help!

...also, I mentioned to a couple of you to bring your motorcycles. We were thinking of sending some on bikes up to Ridge Trail to work a couple of spots, but we have enough on #252 to keep us all busy. Plan on just working there.
Thanks!

If ever hard work is fun, this is it. There was someone from every user group there, it was really cool. Unfortunately only two of us dirt bikers showed and it was good to meet you Mike. I think everyone should consider doing this, not just because it's good for the trails but it is a really good time and pretty fun. So thanks Steve for keeping us updated and hope to see more people on the 25th.

I think there were 3 moto guys- Chris, Mike and Rich. We got a bunch done for the size of group we had (about 20?). My back is killing me from all the heavy rock lifting, but twas to be expected. I had a great time and thanks again for your help!

A 4x4 group has a work project planned for the 25th. I believe they are going to be working in the Graveyard Flats area. You could call Ranger Kalyn for details: 801-342-5280. I may also be doing something on my own (still USFS sanctioned), not sure yet.
