Ha Ha...I guess if you consider owning the current points lead as "not fairing so well", then I guess you're right?

Sounds like it was a big mess. Rain starting at 2 am and continuing on throughout the day. Lots of DNF's from what I hear, lot of people quitting early. Flash flood conditions.

Can't wait for the video.

Who knows, maybe there will still be some significant snow on the ground for the April round here in Utah?

Wow..those are crazy weather conditions!! Interesting results too...Robert Underwood 4th overall.

Two years ago at the Sage Riders National I was sweeping loop 2. About 10 miles in, I came across a kid (Robert Underwood) who had been sitting there for a very long time. He had completely exploded his rear wheel/hub. Spokes were ripped out of the hub and the sprocket was destroyed.

Well, I drew the short straw of our sweep crew and was left to hang out with this kid and figure something out. I spent about an hour shooting the bull with him. He was a nice enough kid (only about 16-17 at the time) but talked like a typical teenager and was making lots of claims about being a sponsored rider, running top-ten before he blew up his wheel, blah blah. I figured he was full of it, but after doing a little more researching when I got home, I found out he was a very fast Nevada kid and seemed legit.

I finally devised a plan to go back to the pits and borrow a rear wheel off of my buddie's 450X and take it back to him to get him out of the hills. It was successful, but in the process, he sure didn't seem very grateful and was a little cocky about the whole process so it kind of rubbed me the wrong way. He hardly even said thanks, and took off the minute we had it buttoned up.

It was just one interaction and I'm sure as he has gotten faster and older that he has matured.

Congrats to anyone for finishing that race.
Mike

Video worked for me detox. The sand dune stuff looked pretty good but obviously it was really slick and muddy for most of the course. The start looked like a mud bog. Shawn Strong 10th overall, good job! I think Clay Davies went down too, not sure where he ended up.

Round 3 was awesome! It was a muddy mess, about five miles into the race my roll offs broke and it was off with the goggles from then on. I am still flushing the dirt out of my eyes today! The first loop was kinda fast with some fun little rocky washes. Clay was riding awesome, he passed me on the First loop and was not looking back, he hammered down on the fast sections and kept putting time on me, when I came into the pits Rob "clays dad" pitted me and said clay had about five min on me and he was running 10th and was in 12th or 13th. I had never raced down here and had no idea what the second loop had instore!?! I was really hoping for some technical stuff becasue I struggle in the fast sections. Luckly for me they mixed it up pretty good and ran us down some technical canyons and some fun rocky hills. I pushed as hard as I could in the technical stuff and started creeping up on the two riders infront of me I caught the guy infront of me and made a pass and went back and fourth a few times but we hit another fast section heading back towards the pits and that rider made another pass on me and started pulling away but I tried to get over my fear and hung in there and he caught the rider infront of him which was Clay, I knew I was going to have to suck it up with 2miles to go to make the pass! luckly for me the last mile was some really slick and rough hills and I made up the time and snuck in and made the pass and the race was on! I sucked it up and tried to pull away with a mile left but Clay was keeping me honest right on me. The both of us were making up time fast on the rider in front of us, I made the pass on him coming over the last hill before the finish! It was awesome, I had no idea I was in the top ten untill the finish!

I would like to thank Rob and Clay for taking my bike down for me and Rob for pitting me, and my Mom sister and Brother for taking me out to the race and helping pit me too.
Brad and Nick at Notch Peak suspension for setting up my bike for me. And my dad for working on my bike for the first time in a couple years!

As far as the rest of the USRA races go look out for Clay Davies #55 he is a deffident threat for top positions on this BETA machine!

Shawn and Clay. Congrats on great finishes! That is really awesome to do that well at a California round. I finally just made the connection that is Clay on the Beta. I saw him (the bike) at Mesquite and St. George and never made the connection. So is that bike basically still a white KTM? That's what they were in previous years (KTM 525 or 450 motor).

Here's Destry's take on the way things went down at Round 3, pretty cool story...sounds like he could've used a jet-ski!

This was listed on Destry's site, and it's nuts. The way the water rushed into the camera, I assume this rider was needing a snorkel!

Good job Shawn. And if u wanted info on the type of course/terrain down there, u know who was born & raised on that dirt/sand. And his dad is older than dirt & has raced out there for over 30yrs!
U should of let us know u were going, my brother was there (and brother in law) & u could of camped/pitted with him since u have met him at Best in the Desert. He was out there last week & it was 82 degree's. I'm guessing the lake bed was a LAKE!! It will stay like that for weeks. They have been getting hit hard with rain down there & it really does not rain there that much.

Glad u had a good time. As for #55, u know that number ROCKS!!!
Take it easy.

Here's a short clip of Beau's personal helmet cam footage, pre-running "Loop B" on Saturday at El Centro...I hope KATO or somebody got some photos at the rocky drop off in that narrow wash, looks pretty awesome!

Awesome pics Shawn. You guys really were close right to the end. Reading Destry's report, it sounds like he had a pretty crazy race going on with Dave as well, right to the end.

Found this pic on the KTM website in the report for Dave P's 3rd place finish. That's Shawn in the background.
