TOPIC: Maurice Hinchey...up for re-election

Maurice Hinchey...up for re-election 1 year, 11 months ago #94486

As all of you are well aware, Maurice Hinchey is the New York congressman that has been sponsoring the "Red Rock Wilderness Bill" every year for the past 20 years or so.

Through facebook, I just found out that he is up for re-election this year. The gentleman trying to take his seat is a conservative republican by the name of George Phillips.

I figure if Hinchey is out of office, then for the time being at least, we wouldn't have to worry about the Red Rock Wilderness Bill.

If there is anything any of you can do, least of which spread the word, that would be great!

Here is a link to his website:

Hinchey is a %^&($#@*&^#! I like to send him anonymous hate email every once and a while just for fun. His web site won’t let you in unless you know the correct zip code for his district. I have found that 12701 works just fine.

Big surprise there, some eastern politician wants to lock up our land rights. I wonder how much kick back he gets from SUWA? Every day this administration gives us a new reason not to trust them. And there going to try and ram this monument bill down our throats just like the health care bill. Why are they even spending time on this when we have ten million people out of work, and we are fighting two wars. It just blows my mind about were their priorities are. what a joke!

Just befriended their campaign manager - Scott Stannard - on facebook and here is his replies to me. We ALL need to do the same and make donations to his campaign to help.

i have posted some and another guy did as well. Tell everyone to send me a request. We need support on our campaign. We ran in 2008 and lost but we feel that we have a very strong chance this year. The tide is turning in ny, the tea party groups are coming out in full force
8:30pmCarlo

I will definitely post in on the website and I will post your comment as well. Good Luck and we wish the best. I am also going to email your comments to a couple groups that have spent Tens of thousands of dollars fight Hinchey and his BS. You may get contacted by them as well. One is the Utah Shared Access Alliance and the other is Blue Ribbon Coalition. Let me know if there is anything else we can do to help.
8:32pmScott

Yea George Phillips the guy running for congress I had him contact Utah Shared Access but there hands are tied with the non profit status

our web site is www.electgeorgephillips.com
8:34pmScott

I know that your guys can't vote but if people could donate just a few dollars that would help as well. Dont take this the wrong way I think this is crazy that we have to reach out to the people in utah with a NY Congressional race, but u can thank Hinchey for that one

he's wacky trust me i know him well

Yea anything would help, this is crazy because i would be pissed if a utah congressman tried telling us in ny what we could and couldn't do with our land

tell the other racers to send me a request also

If we could get big enough support it maybe worth while for George to come to utah to meet with people

I'm also a "fan" of Maurice Hinchey on Facebook, and OFTEN tell him to stay out of our state.

Probably wouldn't hurt if more people did the same.

A simple search for his name will do; then feel free to voice your concerns.

The logic behind me doing that is to point out to his constituents that he is spending his time on a Utah issue when he should be spending his time woring out the issues on his district and on a national level.

As far as I've been able to tell not many of his constituents even know about the bill....let alone know that we (Utahns) don't want it.

You can do more than send him anonymous hate emails...you can become his friend on facebook, and tell him there, in full view of about 1,100 of his constituents.

And isn't it funny that he has no problem proposing bills that will directly affect people outside of his district, but in order to email him you have to live in his district???? The man is a walking contradiction.

His posting on Facebook last Friday:

Maurice Hinchey
Closing Minnewaska State Park and other parks throughout NY would be a huge mistake. Minnewaska is stunningly beautiful and the people of NY as well as visitors should be able to freely enjoy this part of our state. From a purely economic standpoint, closing these parks makes no sense. Visits to our state parks generate tourism money and the state would lose out on that money by closing Minnewaska and other parks.

Yet, it's OK to close off our access to land in Utah? What a jerk.

One thing that needs to be exposed is that Congressman Hinchey is in Robert Redfords pocket (probably his pants front pocket). Remember that the Red Rocks Wilderness Bill was originally written by Utahs own Congressman Wayne Owens (who was without question, in Redfords front pants pocket). Redford also has a home in New York and is a big campaigner for Hinchey. I wonder how the people of New York feel about their Congressman being a TOOL for Robert Redfords agenda?!

Everyone,
I received this from the George Phillips campaign in New York state.
If you are good at writing Letter's to the Editor, please consider sending
some to the New York papers. I find it interesting that most of Hinchey's
constituants don't know that THEIR congressmen has spent the last 15 years
trying to cram the Red Rock Land Grab down the throats of UTAH residents who
oppose it.
Perhaps Mr. Hinchey should focus on spending his time, efforts and money
"fixing" problems in his own state instead of trying to DESTROY the economy
of rural Utah.

Dear Friend in Utah,

I write to you as a candidate for United States Congress
against Maurice Hinchey, long-time champion of the "Red Rock Wilderness Act,
" legislation that would declare 9 million acres of land in Utah off limits.

Perhaps never in the history of Congress has there been
such a breech of ethics --- with a Member of Congress pushing to control and
regulate land in another state as Hinchey has done to the people of Utah.

I've talked with State Representative Mike Noel, who
represents the Red Rock region, former Congressman Jim Hansen and many
others in Utah about Hinchey's actions and how much anguish he has caused.

We have a race we can win against Hinchey in an area of
Upstate New York full of small towns where the number of Republicans and
Democrats is roughly equal.

And unlike Hinchey, I am dedicated to return to a limited
federal government and states' rights.

We've highlighted Hinchey's attempted Utah land obsession
on our website and we're racing towards an important March 31st fundraising
deadline.

If you would like to send a message to Hinchey and help
send him out of Washington for good, please donate today.

We can accept donations on our campaign website ----
www.electgeorgephillips.com ---- or at our PO Box below.

Thank you for your consideration and please spread the
word to friends!

Re:Maurice Hinchey...RETIRING!!!! 2 weeks, 6 days ago #118652

www.politico.com/news/stories/0112/71615.html

Politico.com is announcing the news that Maurice Hinchey of New York IS RETIRING.

Democratic Rep. Maurice Hinchey will retire from Congress at the end of 2012, his office announced Wednesday.

Hinchey, 73, recently completed treatment for colon cancer. He underwent a second round of surgery last week, a follow-up for an earlier operation in July. Hinchey has been declared cancer free by his doctors, according to a statement from his office.

Hinchey will officially announce his retirement Thursday at the Senate House State Historic Site in Kingston, N.Y., where he first announced his first campaign for Congress.Hinchey was first elected to the House in 1992 after 18 years in the New York state Assembly.

Hinchey is one of the most liberal members of the House Democratic Caucus. He also holds a senior post on the powerful Appropriations Committee.

Born in Manhattan, Hinchey came from humble roots; his father was a cement plant worker. After graduating from high school, Hinchey served in the U.S. Navy, then returned to work for two years in the same plant as his dad. In order to pay for college, Hinchey worked the night shift as a toll booth collector. Following his graduation from college, Hinchey got a job as an analyst with the New York state education department. In 1974, he made the jump to the state Assembly.

“Born to a working class family in New York City’s Lower West Side, Maurice has helped lead the effort to prevent abusive corporate practices and ensure fair economic policies that strengthen the middle class and create jobs in all sectors of the economy,” his official bio states.

Hinchey was a vocal critic of former President George W. Bush. Back home, he has been strongly opposed to the use of hydraulic fracking by oil companies drilling in New York.

THE NEW YORK TIMES IS ALSO MAKING THE ANNOUNCEMENT

www.nytimes.com/2012/01/19/nyregion/hinc...r=1&ref=politics

New York Democrat Will Not Seek 11th Term in U.S. House
By RAYMOND HERNANDEZ
Published: January 18, 2012

Representative Maurice D. Hinchey, a 10-term Democrat from the mid-Hudson Valley, announced on Wednesday that he would not seek re-election this year.

The announcement did not come as a complete surprise because Mr. Hinchey, 73, had been undergoing treatment for colon cancer.

Mr. Hinchey’s office issued a statement saying that he planned to discuss his decision on Thursday at a news conference in Kingston, N.Y. The statement also said that the representative had been “declared cancer-free” by his doctors.

Mr. Hinchey’s retirement is all but certain to affect negotiations between Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and legislative leaders over the new boundaries they are considering for the state’s Congressional districts. Because New York’s population growth has not kept pace with that of other states, its number of representatives in the House will shrink this year to 27, from 29. That means two current members of Congress will find themselves without districts once leaders in Albany complete the state’s new political maps.

Democratic and Republican leaders are hoping to reach a deal in which each party gives up one House seat. While Republicans have floated the names of possible casualties in their ranks, Democratic leaders have been struggling to figure out which district to eliminate.

With Mr. Hinchey’s decision to retire when his term ends this year, Democratic leaders are suddenly under far less pressure to sacrifice a sitting member of Congress in their party as part of the redistricting process.

In Congress, Mr. Hinchey was known as an unassuming and low-profile politician who was a reliable vote for his party. Yet he wielded some influence. With a seat on the powerful Appropriations Committee, he routinely inserted money for his district and state into federal spending bills, making him popular with constituents and with colleagues who came to rely on him.

I've long since been banned from posting on his facebook pages (same with SUWA's)...It's also worth noting, that SUWA just asked their sheep to "thank" him for "protecting" Utah's red rock wilderness on that very same facebook page. So now there are hundreds of "Utah Loves You" posts on there...anyone that hasn't been banned should definately post some "good riddance" posts on his page.
