AMANDA MAHEU: THE NEXT BIG THING?
Author: Megan Blackburn Features | Wednesday, 18 November 2009 00:00

If you ever thought motocross was just a boys sport, you're sorely mistaken. Girls in this industry are getting faster and faster, and with their ever growing recognition, the classes are growing and competition is getting stronger. Amanda Maheu of Utah is one of those up and coming super fast chicks. In the Girls 11-15 class she isn't just one of the fastest contenders, she swept every moto at this year's Loretta Lynn's and is already prepping for 2010. Her future is looking bright and we've checked in with Maheu to see where she is at on her journey in motocross and off-road, check it out!

Hello, Miss Amanda! This year you won the Girls 11-15 class at Loretta's. Congrats! How were you feelin' coming into the race?
AM- Thank you. I was nervous and excited to be back at Loretta Lynn's. When they had to tow our motorhome in by a tractor I thought for sure we were in for a week of mud racing!

Winning all of your motos I'd say you're on the ball! What were you doing ahead of time to get prepared mentally and physically?
AM- I tried really hard to train for the humidity, it gets hot in Utah but we don't have the humidity to deal with. At Loretta's, I made sure I stayed hydrated all the time. My pre-race mental preparation involves listening to my IPOD while stretching and warming up.

Mini O's and the Amateur Open are right around the corner. Can we expect to see you at either?
AM- Unforunately we won't make it to Mini O's this year, but you will see me at the Amateur Open.

What are you doing to stay busy during this off-season?
AM- Is there really an off-season in motocross? (Laughs) I'm currently in California training for the Amateur Open.

As a girl racer coming up in the world of motocross, what are your long-term goals as far as developing into a professional women's racer?
AM- My biggest long term goal is to stay healthy. We are working on a good training program that will continue to improve my endurance and consistency.

Am I crazy or did I see you at the final round of the WORCS series just a few weeks ago?
AM- You're not crazy, I was there. I had a bad crash in practice, decided to race and had another crash during the race. Not the best day for me.

So what do you think of the off-road racing scene?
AM- I enjoy off road racing, especially the crazy fast sand sections. I think it makes you a better all around rider.

I think it's become well-known that girls can play and ride just as the boys can! Do you think the sport is fair for both boys and girls as far as rules, recognition and racing?
AM- I think women's motocross racing has come a long way. The rules and class structure continue to change and evolve. They have changed for the better and I'm excited for the future. Girls are getting a lot more recognition in the sport.

Any details on the 2010 season with sponsors?
AM- In addition to all of my awesome 2009 sponsors, I've received a few new sponsors for 2010. Dunlop tires and Vonzipper goggles!

Congrats! Who would you like to thank?
AM- I would like to thank all of my sponsors. Rod at Fly, Christina at Roost MX, Mike at Rock River Powersports, John at Vonzipper, Jon at Local Hero Jersey, Scott at Stealthworks, Dunlop, Hinson, FMF, Renthal, Works Connection, Engine Ice, RAD, Excel. I would also thank my Mom, Dad, my grandparents and John at XLT Racing.

Thank you for your time with Vurb and good luck in 2010!
AM- Thanks and hope to see you all at the races.
